Sioux Falls Regional Airport
2801 Jaycee Lane, Sioux Falls, South Dakota 57104, United StatesFacts and History about Sioux Falls Regional Airport
Sioux Falls Regional Airport (IATA, KFSD, FAA LID: FSD, ICAO: FSD), also widely known as Joe Foss Field, is a public and military airport 5km Northwest of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in the United States.
The Airport was named in memory and honor of a native aviator of Sioux Falls, Joe Foss, who later became the 20th Governor of South Dakota.
From 2011 to 2015, Sioux Falls Airport was known as a primary commercial service airport for having more than 10,000 enplanements per year.
In 2021, the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) recorded that the Airport served 1,011,470 passengers with 67,191 aircraft operations.
Joe Foss Field covers 635 hectares at an elevation of 436 meters Above Mean Sea Level. It has three runways and one concrete helipad.
The airport terminal has seven gates with loading tunnels. It also has Customs and Border Protection facilities only used for cargoes and general aviation.
It also serves as Joe Foss Field Air National Guard Station that shelters South Dakota Air National Guard and its 114th Fighter Wing, also known as the “Fighting Lobos,” and operates F-16C/D aircraft.
History of Sioux Falls Regional Airport
In 1937, Sioux Falls Regional Airport was built as an airfield.
In early 1942, the city sought help from the Federal Government and later leased the airport property to become the Sioux Falls Army Air Base. Its primary function was to establish a radio operator training facility.
Between 1942 and 1945, an estimated 40,000 radio operators were trained in Sioux Falls. The base was also used for the logistics and supply center.
In 1946, the Airport property was returned to the care of the city. It was also the year when the South Dakota Air National Guard was established under the supervision of Joseph “Joe” Jacob Foss.
The Air National Guard is based in the south and west of the commercial and general airport areas, north of Russell Street. It has all the standard facilities of a small unit of the United States Air Force except for family housing.
The 114th’s Fighter Planes, F-16C, and F-16D, frequently conduct their training and routine operations in the area.
In 1940, the Airport recorded its first commercial airline flights to mid-continent countries. Braniff Airlines left in 1967; West Airlines arrived in 1955; North Central in 1957; and Ozark in 1962.
In 1992, there were 28 daily flights from eight airlines, according to the Airport’s data.
In 2005, Joe Foss Field became one of the first landing fields to transfer its workforce from the federal government's jurisdiction to the local state.
Covenant Aviation Security was the first agency to provide baggage and passenger screening services under contract with the Transportation Security Administration and the Screening Partnership Program. Now, the Trinity Technology Group is in charge of the security and screening functions in the Airport.
Sioux Falls Regional Airport continues to emerge in development and now caters to year-round and seasonal flights to 19 countries.
The Airport continues to embrace innovations, from technology to expansions.
In the Spring of 2009, the Sioux Falls Regional Airport proceeded on a three-phase, multi-million-dollar renovation, and expansion project designed by Koch Hazard Architects.
Project inclusions are renovations and expansions of the ticketing and check-in counter area. They were moving all screening equipment of the Transportation Security Administration behind the ticketing counters, relocating Gift Shops, and updating the concourse with a business lounge.
They also installed new jet bridges/tunnels and reconfigured the airport’s parking system.
In 2012, the projects were in full completion. From March to October 2012, restaurants in the terminal’s lower level were overhauled. Another long-term parking lot was built in the same year due to high demand.
In 2014, many working job opportunities paved the way for the locals of the entire South Dakota. This year, human work began to replace machinery. The Terminal Lobby and expanded security checkpoint opened.
More improvements were implemented in the facility to cope with the modernization in the industry.
